Review of Five Guys Burgers and Fries

leave a comment »

Five Guys (or should I say ‘Cinco hombres’?) is probably the most buzzing burger joint around. Everybody’s always talking about how delicious Five Guys’ burgers are. Well I’ve eaten there three times now, so I think I’m qualified enough to critique it. I’ll be covering several different parameters for this review: Variety, taste,  and price.

standard Five Guys meal

There is not much variety at all at Five Guys Burgers and Fries. They have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and bacon cheeseburgers. Then they have the little versions of all of those. The regular burgers have 2 meat patties, and the little burgers have 1 meat patty. They also have fries, of course, as well as hot dogs. That’s all. Seriously, that is everything on the menu. To be fair, you shouldn’t really expect much variety judging from the name of the establishment.

not much variety

I do very much like the way the ordering is set up though. At most places, they have burgers that come standard with a bunch of vegetables and sauces and you have to tell them what you don’t want on it. At Five Guys, all of the burgers come standard plain, and you tell them what you do want on it. I prefer this system, as it makes it easier for people to order without having to check out the menu for 10 minutes.

The regular burgers (2 meat patties) probably weigh somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 pound, which is a pretty decent size.

My only beef with the variety at Five Guys is that they only have one kind of bread for the burgers – the stereotypical sesame seed burger buns. They should have some options like Texas toast or whole wheat.

The burgers at Five Guys, while extremely greasy, are pretty damn good. As I’ve already mentioned, they are a decent size – not too small, not too big. I can’t think of anything to compare them to, because they’re different than any other fast food burgers I’ve ever had. I would rank them as being better than Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Jack’s, and Dairy Queen burgers by far, and slightly better or equal to Hardees/Carl’s Jr – not to say they taste the same at all.

The fries are decent. There’s nothing particularly outstanding about them, but they are good. There are only two sizes, regular and large, or as I would call them – ‘large’ and ‘holy fuck so many fries.’ There needs to be a smaller size for people that don’t want to spend so much on fries, but I’m getting out of my parameters now so I’ll get back to that later.

The burgers at Five Guys are consistently touted as being the best burgers ever, but that’s a bit of an exaggeration. As far as fast food goes, yeah, they might actually be the best I’ve had. The only competition I know of is Hardees/Carl’s Jr.  But they aren’t as good as homemade burgers or burgers at some sit down restaurants, so don’t be fooled.

The regular burgers will run you about $6-$8 including tax (depends on where you live and what you get on it), and the little burgers cost about $4-$6.

Like I said before, there are only two sizes of fries, both of which are humongous. The regular fries cost about $2-$3 while the large fries are about $3-$5.  They really need to offer a smaller size. I’m used to only spending $1.50ish on fries, and I don’t even want as many fries as comes in their regular size.

Not sure if that's the regular or large fry. Either way it's too many.

So here’s the summary:

  • Five Guys Burgers and Fries is a relatively expensive place. It costs more to eat here than at any other fast food place I can think of.
  • With that said, their burgers really are some of the best fast food burgers around. They’re not as good as some sit down restaurant burgers or homemade burgers though.
  • The fries are decent, but only come in really large and expensive sizes.
  • The ordering system is easily the best of any fast food place. All burgers come plain and you tell them what to put on it.
  • Not much variety: burgers, hot dogs, and fries are your only options.
